The Challenge

We were approached by Holiday Inn Manchester City Centre to name and brand their underused canalside terrace space.

We researched the local area of Manchester city centre and came across several historical buildings close to the site of the terrace. The location of the Holiday Inn Manchester City Centre is beside the original location of a victorian school named ‘Roby Day and Sunday School’ one of the original schools with the city centre, built in 1844.

Inspired by the ornate nature of the original Roby School building, we have developed an identity full of charisma and personality. Taking a lead from architectural forms of the original school building, we developed a modern take on Victorian opulence.

Our Approach

Inspired by the past

We designed a graphic system using shapes and forms inspired by the exterior of the victorian ‘Roby School’ building. Elements included the stunning ‘Oriel’ and arched windows and the grand entrance doorways.

Alongside this graphic system, a flexible colour palette, enables communications to stays fresh and evolve but hold consistency to the ‘Roby 1884’ style.

The terrace had hugely successful launch with high engagement levels on both Facebook and Instagram with over 11,000 comments and 3,300 likes on a single publicity post.
